Alcohol consumption can cause several different memory problems. In one study it was shown that heavy drinkers have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and dementia later in life. This is probably due to the toxic effect that alcohol has on the neurons in your brain.
Alcohol can also cause Vitamin B deficiencies which can lead to a disorder called Korsakoff's syndrome which can result in permanent long-term memory loss. Excessive alcohol consumption can also cause blackouts and memory loss. Some studies show that this is because alcohol inhibits the ability of memories to be transferred from short-term to long-term memory. Some recent studies have shown that light drinking (up to one drink a day) may have a beneficial effect on memory, but the reasons for this are still unclear.
